Getting respite to suit you
Getting respite care to suit you depends on:
- where you live
- what services are available in your area
- the sort of care needed
- whether there is any cost
- how urgent your need is.
You may need to talk with several organisations to find out the respite care that is available in your area and whether it will suit you. Unfortunately we can’t list all the places that offer respite care, because there are so many.
If you need respite care in an emergency, call your local Commonwealth Respite and Carelink Centre on 1800 052 222 (or 1800 059 059 after hours). They may also be able to tell you about other respite options, or you can talk with disability services or Carers Australia in your state or territory.
If the person you care for has disability, the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) may be able to arrange respite care for them.
If the person you care for is aged over 65, My Aged Care may be able to arrange respite care for them. If you need respite care in an emergency, you and the person you care for will be assessed to see if you can get respite care. You and the assessor can talk about and decide which services would best suit you and the person you care for.
The assessment may be a phone conversation or a meeting. Various organisations provide respite care, and the assessment will be different depending on the organisation.
