3 things to remember about navigating the system – where to go for what
Australian has a wide range of support for carers, including counselling, equipment, help at home or respite care. But one of the most common complaints from carers is that it can be hard to know where to get the help you need.
It’s even more tricky when several organisations offer the same sort of service. Find out what you need to remember about getting support.
Main support services
There are 3 main organisations offering support to carers and the people they care for.
The main difference between the 3 organisations is who they support.
- Carer Gateway – supports you, the carer
- National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) – supports the person you care for, if they have disability
- My Aged Care – supports the person you care for, if they are aged
First thing to remember – there are several organisations who may be able to help
Any carer can go to Carer Gateway. Carer Gateway provides online information and services such as phone counselling for carers. You can also call Carer Gateway and staff in your area will talk through what you need and help you to find local services and support.
Carers who look after a person with disability can also go to the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS). The person you care for may be able to get an NDIS package that includes a range of support. That support might also help you.
Carers who look after an aged person can also go to My Aged Care. The person you care for may be able to get a My Aged Care package that includes a range of support. That support might also help you. You and the person you care for will need to talk to an Aged Care Assessment Team (ACAT) to work out what help you can get.
Second thing to remember – you don’t have to get it right first time
You don’t have to know which organisation will be able to help you before you call. When you talk with Carer Gateway, the NDIS or My Aged Care, they will be able to tell you who can best help you.
For example, when you talk with Carer Gateway, they may figure out that you should get the service you need through My Aged Care. They will talk you through what you need to do.
Third thing to remember – you can’t get the same service from 2 organisations
If you have already organised a service through one organisation, you can’t get that service again from another organisation. For example, if you have organised home help through the NDIS, you can’t also get home help through My Aged Care.
You can get different services from different organisations. For example, you may be able to get home help through My Aged Care, and emergency respite care through Carer Gateway.
