Ask for what you need
There are many services and supports available for you as a carer, and for the person you care for.
You can explore the Carer Gateway website to find out about a wide range of help, from counselling and online coaching, to respite and home care.
But you don’t have to just look for something on a list that you think might help.
What if it isn’t on the list?
If you don’t see what you need, just ask!
Tell us about your problems and we may be able to help.
The new Carer Gateway service, and other support services such as the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) and My Aged Care, aim to provide support that people need, not just offer a list of services.
Carer Gateway has services to support you, the carer. The NDIS supports the person you care for, if they have disability; and My Aged Care supports the person you care for, if they are aged.
When you talk with these organisations, they will:
- find out what you need
- explore local services that can help you
- put you in contact with people that can help, or help you to book services you need
What if I don’t know what I need?
Sometimes you don’t even know what to ask for. That’s OK.
When you call Carer Gateway (or National Disability Insurance Scheme or My Aged Care), just talk through what is happening and what you are having trouble with. The staff will work with you to figure out what could help you, and how to get it.
