What’s new in carer support

2 minute read

Since 2015, Carer Gateway has worked hard to give carers useful information and links to many supports and services.

Carer Gateway is now changing to make it even easier for you to get the help you need.

Find help in your area

If you are a carer, you can get help in many areas – from payments and concessions to respite care, home help and equipment.

But we know it can be hard and time-consuming to find your way through the system.

From September 2019, Carer Gateway will do the hard work for you. You can call just one number to find the help you need. Carer Gateway staff in your area will talk through what you need and help you to find local services and support.

Call Carer Gateway on 1800 422 737

We are setting up new local Carer Gateway service providers to make sure that the person you talk with knows your area and can give you direct help.

Support for you right on the website

Carer Gateway is setting up services to give you support, skills and information.

  • Phone counselling – from July 2019, you can talk with a counsellor over the phone if you are feeling stressed or if you need advice. From September 2019, you will also be able to arrange to meet a counsellor in person
  • Carer forum – from July 2019, you can join the carer forum to be part of an online community, and get support and advice from other carers
  • Self-guided coaching – you can work through interactive online coaching sessions at your own pace. You can find a range of topics to help you in your caring role. From September 2019, you will also be able to arrange to work one-on-one with a coach to learn new skills
  • Skills courses – you can use these short online courses to help you to learn new skills in caring for someone and yourself
