First Nations Carers
Acknowledgement of Country
The Department of Social Services acknowledges the Traditional Owners and Custodians of Country throughout Australia and acknowledges their continuing connection to land, water and community. We pay our respects to the people, the cultures and the Elders past and present.
Our communities are strongest when everyone is strong. Caring for someone in your family or community can be tough.
Whether you’re caring for Nan or Pop, someone with disability or a health concern, or anyone who needs day to day support, you can get free help for yourself.
Support is available for all unpaid, ‘informal’ carers, including both young and old carers. Carers may receive other support payments and still access Carer Gateway services.
Carer Gateway is a safe place where you can find information and get support and services in your area and online, such as:
- Phone counselling and free courses - or you can connect with other carers through our peer support groups and online forum.
- You can also get a support package that could help you with work, study and your caring role.

I care for family members with mental illness.
It’s challenging, but I see it as a family obligation that’s made easier when I look after myself.
Through Carer Gateway, I’ve accessed lots of information and support that took the load off my shoulders.
Carer Gateway is there to support me and all carers.
Our communities are strongest when everyone is strong.
It’s OK to reach out for support.

My grandma lives with cancer, and I spend time with her to make sure she has her medicine.
Through Carer Gateway, I have connected with people who have similar experiences.
It’s important for us carers to look out for ourselves.
Carer Gateway is there to support me and all carers.
Our communities are strongest when everyone is strong.
It’s ok to reach out for support.
